New Build, Prototype. September 2023. Luthier Jorge Sandoval, from Venezuela, South America has been building for more than 20 years. He studied lutherie in 2001 with the construction of Classical guitar and Venezuelan Cuatro. He became interested in the construction of ukuleles because of its beauty in sound, versatility and the great variety that exists. He finds freedom of creativity and challenge to get everything in its right place. His most favourite part is at the end when he applies the finish, it’s when the wood and the instrument pops and comes to life! To him, the most important aspect is to achieve the sound he envisioned, maintain that sustain in his instruments and find the warmth that captivates the instrument. This tenor provides just that, naturally when a spruce top is used it is initially very bright but the way Jorge constructed this is surprisingly warm, there’s incredible sustain, projection and a balanced mix of bass, mids and trebles. Paired with Brazilian Rosewood (scientific name Dalbergia nigra) really accentuates the resonance and warmth. The soundboard is braced with modified falcate design, not a usual bracing pattern on an ukulele. This design allows more movement on the soundboard, increased flexibility which contributes to a more responsive and dynamic instrument. Not only it has incredible sound, it is adorned with Brazilian rosewood appointments and additional premium features you’d normally would have to pay extra for, it feels great to play very comfortable to hold.
